Statement
I create to uplift, inspire, and nurture connection with the natural world.
My current body of work focuses on birds and their behaviors and habitats. Many of these pieces attribute human characteristics to our avian companions: What do they think or dream about? What is important to them?
My goal is to invite curiosity in the viewer, from getting to know what type of bird is depicted to deeper meanings in a piece’s imagery and title that can prompt thoughts of wonder, ecosystems, and human influence.
My paintings are made using acrylics on birch panels. These materials let me work quickly and allow interplay between paint and wood, often showing the rougher texture that happens naturally by dragging the brush over the finely grained surface.
Brushwork is very important to me. I spent many years studying Chinese calligraphy and ink painting, and the skills learned during that time guide my mark-making today.
When creating a painting, I am intrigued by the interplay of line, shape, negative space, and vibrant color and how these elements combine to engage and delight viewers, with the hope of drawing them closer to the wild yet fragile abundance of life all around us.
